The top strap and frame rounds are bead blasted to achieve a matte appearance.

A classic N frame revolver, the Highway Patrolman is blued, but it is not polished, saving labor costs.

The Model 28 is unusual in that Smith & Wesson removed, rather than added, features to the Model 27 to create it, in order to reduce production costs with no reduction in utility. The Registered Magnum morphed into the Model 27. Demand for target 22 LR pistols has dropped so S&W now gears up Mod 41 production just one month out of the year (November). Our Assessment: The Model 28, also known as the Highway Patrolman, traces its heritage back to the Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum. Note: I ordered a new 7" barrel, made in 2009 for my Mod 41 made in 1984 and it fit perfectly. There were many different barrel and sight options but they don't affect the core of the Mod 41. I find this amazing because the gun was so well designed that production changes were not necessary in its 64 years of production. With that exception, parts for a 1957 model are exactly the same as a current production model. The only dash number affiliated with a Mod 41 is a dash 1, which is a 22 Short model (intro in 1960). Nearly all S&W handguns have experienced "engineering changes" as noted in the model number by a dash and number, such as a 686-3. The number of Mod 41 produced each year remained pretty constant at about 7000 per year so it would appear your gun was made in the 5th year of production (1962) so your predicted date of manufacture seems to be accurate. Serial numbers started with 1401 in 1957 and went to 115,000 in 1970. Serial numbers went from a straight numeric to an "A" prefix in 1970. in 1959, the 5" lightweight barrel was introduced and dropped in 1963, when a 5 1/2" heavy barrel was introduced. There are some important dates that help. After 1970, S&W serial number history is quite accountable. From 1954 to 1970 all model 39, 41, 44, 46, and 52 pistols shared the same numeric serial number range so it's hard to determine exactly what years a gun was made. Even then, it took S&W another year to get into BATFE compliance. S&W kept very poor serial number records until it was forced to change by the Gun Control Act of 1968 (went into effect Jan 1, 1969). They have been made at S&W's factory in Maine every since. During the first year of production (1957), manufacturing moved from Springfield, Mass to Houlton, Maine. The owner had ordered a Mod 41 for a customer in 1984 but it never got picked up and stayed locked up in a safe.

I got stupid and let a friend talk me out of my first 41 then went 20 years without one until I found a LGS that was going out of business. This is my second Mod 41 and was made in the same year as my first 41 (1984). OLIMKI, I also have a Mod 41 with a factory 5 1/2" barrel (adjustable sights) and a 7' barrel with a Nikon 2X20 scope.
