So what does this all mean? It means that in theory, you could download the latest fastboot ROM for your device, replace its programmer with the programmer of an older fastboot ROM that did not require authentication and flash in EDL mode without any obstacles. On the subreddit's Discord server a user, who asked not to be named, sent me a screenshot of a MIUI forum post in which a user noticed some differences between programmers in old and recent whyred fastboot ROMs and alleged, that the programmers bundled with older (anti level 3) fastboot ROMs did not seek authentication so they could be flashed no problem and that is correct as far as I've been told, but the phones could never boot because of anti-rollback protection and anti level 4 ROMs could only be flashed with permission from Xiaomi. As a developer on GitHub claims, programmers are SoC specific but devices only accept programmers signed by their respective OEM and depending on the OEM, different models on the same SoC may use different programmers. Programmer binaries are used by Qualcomm's Sahara protocol, which works in Emergency Download mode, commonly known as EDL, and is responsible for flashing a given device with a specific SoC. So where is it implemented? The answer: in the programmer binaries.

Users have been experimenting with older versions of MiFlash as well as Qualcomm's official flashing tool QFIL, but to no avail, they couldn't flash in EDL because the programs could not bypass the requirement for authentication.

The difference is that applications are mostly closed, they don't grant many people permissions and thus people who aren't on the watch on the forums never get a chance to flash their bricked device in EDL mode. Now, these devices can only be flashed in EDL mode if you use the latest MiFlash and log into it with an account that has EDL flashing permissions. On recent Xiaomi phones, Xiaomi decided to lock EDL flashing behind an application and authentication process that is similar to how you had to apply for bootloader unlocking in the past.
